Cathie Waller
Cathie is a pastel artist who resides in Wodonga.
Cathie worked in administration at Albury TAFE for over 20 years in various roles. After a lengthy illness in 2013/14 she was forced into early retirement. In 2018 she decided to take up art again after a break of more than 30 years. She started out using soft pastel sticks but found them too detrimental to her health.
In 2019 she discovered Pan Pastels. Pan pastels have minimal binder and fillers, resulting in rich, ultra soft and super-blendable colours loaded with the finest quality artists’ pigments which have excellent lightfastness and are fully erasable. In her home studio Cathie surrounds herself with the tools of her trade, sponges and a variety of brushes and a small hand-held vacuum to pick up any loose pigments. She finds joy in the process of blending and layering colours, creating depth and dimension in her work.
Cathie’s art is deeply rooted in realism. Her creations are not mere representations but rather interpretations that breathe life into the subjects. With no formal training, Cathie worked diligently to refine her skills allowing the process to evolve.
Her versatility as an artist is evident in the diverse range of her work. She is inspired by a variety of themes, including still life, botanicals, portraits, landscapes and seascapes. More recently, Cathie has devoted more time to Australian flora and fauna. This stems from her deep love of the Australian bush and wildlife.
Cathie participates in exhibitions, both online and in person. She held her first solo exhibition in October 2025 as a new Resident Artist at Art Gallery on Ovens in Wangaratta.
