John specialises in close-up photography. He finds intricate patterns and abstract artwork in the natural world we see everyday and yet “do not see”.

He captures images of life up close. He sees the extraordinary in a career of 50 years. Starting his passion with film meant he was economical and selective in his shooting. 

​

He goes out with a simple camera with a macro lens and no tripod, for his regular walks through the botanical gardens, or his own garden, and only takes a few shots. “After all you only need one image” – the right image. He makes a decision based on a 100 possible positions of angle and a moment with the best lighting for the pre-visualised photograph, a final printed image.

A number of artists have looked at his printed work and said how did you ever get that? The answer is in the thousands of hours he spent in the field not getting that image.

He is inspired by the colours, patterns, shapes and complexity of nature. Whether the multiple shades of tree bark, the spirals on a cauliflower head, the beauty of insects, or the intricacies of an orchid flower, all “seen” before the capture.

His work is unique and thought provoking in its beauty and he always has something new to inspire us.
